The Many Colors of Poison : Food Dyes

Artificial Colors

For a while now, I have been avoiding foods with artificial coloring in them. I knew that they were bad for you simply because they were artificial but I didn’t know the facts behind it all. So I did a little reading and I want to share with you some things that I found.

This is a direct quote from Joseph Mercola that being a mother of a small boy, struck me to the core. He said,

Studies have also shown that a variety of common food dyes, and the preservative sodium benzoate — found in many soft drinks, fruit juices and salad dressings — cause some children to become measurably more hyperactive and distractible.

Meanwhile, E-numbered food dyes (such as tartrazine (E102), ponceau 4R (E124), sunset yellow (E110), carmoisine (E122), quinoline yellow (E104) and allura red AC (E129) do as much damage to children’s brains as lead in gasoline, resulting in a significant reduction in IQ.

There are so many childhood and adult illnesses that we have no cure for and no definite cause. Why aren’t we as a nation, as a parent and as a self- looking at what we are eating? Why don’t we care enough about our bodies and our health to take a second look at the label?

Most of us have heard the expression Buyer Beware right? This expression came from the real estate industry because many times the buyer had very little true representation because the agents were paid by the seller. Well it’s true with food as well. The consumer has no representation, no one watching out for your interests.

Buyer beware of what you are purchasing, many times, you are paying someone to poison you!

Make your own food coloring if you wish to dye foods. Here’s a great blog post about how to do that naturally. click here!

Take a look at this label- Inactive Ingredients. It seems insane that these ingredients can be labeled “INACTIVE” when they can cause such harm inside the body.

MSG: Harmless Food Additive

A laboratory created food additive used to enhance the flavor of food. Mono sodium glutamate is the full name.

MSG is passed off as a “natural” and harmless food additive that can be used instead of salt to enhance the flavor of food. MSG or monosodium glutamate is far from natural, it’s lab created and can cause an array of health problems.

Adverse reactions include but not limited to:

• Headache
• Flushing
• Sweating
• Nausea
• Weakness/numbness
• Heart Palpitations
• Chest Pain

I personally am subject to migraine headaches upon consuming this substance in foods. I try to avoid MSG but it is tricky sometimes because manufacturers are not labeling MSG only as Monosodium glutamate anymore. Some of the other names for MSG in our food are:

Autolyzed Yeast
Calcium Caseinate
Glutamic Acid
Hydrolyzed Protein
Monopotassium Glutamate Monosodium Glutamate
Sodium Caseinate
Textured Protein
Yeast Extract
Yeast Food
Yeast Nutrient

Toxic Juice We Drink Everyday

Toxic juice we drink every day- and when I say “we” I mean the general public. You won’t catch me drinking anything Brominated EVER! And I’m writing this blog post to explain why.

First of all what is bromine?

bro·mine (brmn)
n. Symbol Br
A heavy, volatile, corrosive, reddish-brown, nonmetallic liquid element, having a highly irritating vapor. It is used in producing gasoline antiknock mixtures, fumigants, dyes, and photographic chemicals. Atomic weight 79.904; atomic number 35; melting point 7.2°C; boiling point 58.78°C; valence 1, 3, 5, 7. See Table at element.
[French brome (from Greek brmos, stench) + -ine.]

So basically there are companies using bromine in food additives. The most common one is BVO- Brominated vegetable oil. Food and drink manufactures use this substance primarily in citrus flavored items. BVO works as a preservative so that the citrus flavoring does not separate out.

The thing about BVO is that it is illegal in most European countries but NOT in the US. The reason is because it is TOXIC!!!

What can this substance do to your body?

Skin rashes and severe acne
Loss of appetite and abdominal pain
Metallic taste
Cardiac arrhythmias

Then the thyroid issue is the one that strikes home for me having hypothyroidism. Basically bromine prohibits the body from absorbing iodine which is essential for the thyroid to function. To read more about this click HERE and HERE

Below is a screenshot from the website of a popular product, notice the ingredients list… Brominated vegetable oil is listed. It’s not hidden, so now that you have read this blog post, you have no excuse to ever drink bromine again! Right? Promise right now… That you’ll read every label… Waits…. Ok great! If you need electrolytes, find a natural source or drink some coconut water.
